Where did “Roll Tide” come from? The phrase appears in Alabama’s fight sone, “Yea Alabama” which was composed by a UA engineering student in a campus-wide contest following the 1926 Rose Bowl (Alabama won). If you look at the original sheet music the phrase is nowhere in it. It seems that “Roll Tide” was a chant fans inserted at the end of the son which later was incorporated into it. Where did it come from? One clue could be a sea-shanty, “Roll Alabama Roll,” about the CSS Alabama during the Civil War. The phrase “Roll Alabama Roll” is used constantly through out the song which was sung as early as 1870. There is no mention of the tide though. No one really knows.

This is a drawing of one of Denny Chimes a 115-foot tall campanile tower on the south side of The Quad at the University of Alabama. The tower was named in honor of George H. Denny, who served twice as university president. It has a 25-bell carillon, and is one of the most visible landmarks on campus.
